Conclusion of Australian Veteran Advocacy representation

Step One - Initial consultation and Action Plan development

The first step to ensuring the best possible outcome from your interactions with DVA is preparation and planning, and that is where our process begins, with a comprehensive initial consultation to develop an Action Plan tailored to your specific background and individual circumstances.

The Action Plan is a tailored service provided by Australian Veteran Advocacy for a small fee. It will provide the framework for our advocacy services should you engage us as your DVA Representative, or can be used as an aid to self-representation.

From the initial consultation we will:

  • gain an understanding of

    • your military background and service history

    • your current circumstances

    • any current or historic interactions with DVA

  • determine what Acts your service is covered under and what are your specific needs, such as:

    • Veteran Covenant application

    • Non-Liability Health Care access (NLHC)

    • initial liability assessment and/or re-assessment

    • permanent impairment assessment and/or re-assessment

    • retrospective medical discharge

    • access to Home Support

    • access to Incapacity Payments

    • access and utilisation of Provisional Access to Medical Treatment scheme (PAMT)

    • access and utilisation of Medical Expenses Privately Incurred scheme (MEPI)

  • develop the customised Action Plan

    • required information submissions -

      • DVA freedom of information (FOI)

      • Defence health records

      • Civilian health records

    • Needs Assessments -

      • what claims or applications should be submitted

      • what modifications or amendments are required for either historic claims or current claims in progress

      • what rehabilitation / home services or other entitlements should be accessed

The initial consultation can be done in person, via email, via phone or any combination of the three. You should anticipate this process taking one to three hours, depending on the complexity of your situation and what information is readily available.
