Self-Representation

To assist you in self-representation, Australian Veteran Advocacy has put together the following four step self-representation guide, and has also worked with the Navy Transitions Team to collaborate on a self-representation guide for initial liability claims, available here.

While the team at Australian Veteran Advocacy understands that some veterans will want to take the lead on their DVA journey, it is our firm belief that an experienced, quality Advocate is generally the best option to ensure the full range of DVA entitlements are accessed and that all applicable injuries and illnesses are recognised.

If you find that after reading our self-representation guide, or the Navy Transitions self-representation guide, that you are lost or don’t know how to proceed, please contact the Australian Veteran Advocacy team for advice and possible representation.

Step 2 - Ensure you have a DVA file number and access to the Veterans' Covenant

The second step in the DVA initial liability process is to obtain a DVA file number. DVA assigns every veteran a unique identifier, but only on application for the Veterans' Covenant or when a veteran has a claim submitted to DVA.

DVA file number’s normally start with NSM… QSM… TSM… WSM… NV…

Your DVA file number can be found on any DVA issued cards you may already have, such as a White Card or Gold Card.

If you already have a DVA file number, but cannot locate it, call DVA on 13 32 54 and they will provide it to you. Be prepared to confirm your identity.

If you don’t have a DVA file number, there are several ways to apply:

  • Apply through your MyGov account. Detailed instructions can be found on the DVA information page: https://recognition.dva.gov.au/how-veterans-can-apply-information-page

  • Submit a liability claim with DVA via email or post. Applicable to those not eligible to apply for a DVA file number through MyService.

  • Speak to one of the team members at Australian Veteran Advocacy for support.
